How often should you drain, clean and refill a hot tub?

Has your hot tub recently required more frequent balancing? You may have noticed some or all of the following, foam, dirty looking water even when the spa is balanced or discolored water. This is usually due to a build up of total dissolved solids (TDS) in the water. TDS is measures in parts per million (ppm). Whenever your hot tub TDS reaches 1500ppm it is time for a drain clean and refill. Most manufacturers recommend draining, cleaning and refilling residential use hot tubs every 3-4 months to prevent high TDS buildup in the spa. During times of high usage you may find that more frequent draining is required due to accumulation of TDS. Most of the tubs we service are on a 3-4 month drain and clean rotation. Hot tubs fitted with salt water systems can usually go longer between drain and refills. Depending on the manufacturer the recommended interval for draining and refilling a salt tub can be between 6 and 9 months.
